ARTWORK CARE

A Care Guide

Framing

Framing not only protects your artwork but also helps it sit comfortably within your space. Kate recommends using a professional framer and always choosing acid-free, archival-quality materials to ensure longevity. If you’d prefer, she can also arrange framing through her trusted local framer at The Frame Shop, Geelong.

Watercolour paintings on paper are typically framed behind glass. If the artwork will be hanging in a bright or sunny room, it’s worth considering UV-protective glass to help prevent fading.

Paintings on Aquabord are sealed with an archival-quality UV protectant and don’t need to be framed behind glass. These look particularly beautiful in floating frames that let the textured surface show through.

Display

To help your artwork last, try to hang it somewhere out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, smoke, or sudden changes in temperature. Bathrooms, kitchens, and areas near fireplaces or heaters aren’t ideal, as the heat and humidity can affect both the surface and structure of the piece. A stable, dry environment with gentle light will always be the safest option.

Handling

When moving or unpacking your artwork, always handle it with clean, dry hands and try to avoid touching the painted surface directly. If the piece is framed, carry it using the hanging string or the sides of the frame, rather than the top edge or glass, to avoid any strain or slipping.
